Sunset Crater National Monument in Arizona is an extinct volcanic wonderland consisting of towering cinder cones that can be hiked up, and treacherous lava fields that can be carefully navigated through. Sunset Crater is at a high altitude on the Colorado Plateau to the east of to the San Francisco Mountains, which themselves are volcanic in origin and are the highest points in Arizona. Here The Wild Images Team captured a long dead tree standing in the snow covered volcanic cinder soil, surrounded by living pines and in the background by peaks.
