The Fan and Mortar Geyser Complex in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming is a top favorite amongst the more hardcore geyser enthusiasts, though it is barely known or recognized by the general visitor due to the rarity and unpredictability of its eruptions. It goes through long dormant periods where it will not erupt at all for an entire year or more, and even when it does become active it erupts once a week or less, and it has as likely a chance of being overnight in the darkness as it does to be in the day. Nevertheless, you can be assured that as it builds up towards its next eruption, geyser enthusiasts will be found waiting patiently even though the eruption still may be several days away, as the complex gently cycles through low bursts and calm steaming. There is an identified pattern of small eruptions that are called a “lock” where a full eruption may be imminent, and it is for this that these individuals diligently watch. Even in the middle of the night, many of the enthusiasts will camp out in sleeping bags in order to not miss the eruption. So what is it that makes a Fan and Mortar eruption so special? Ask anyone who has witnessed it, and the answer is always the same: the initial burst. Comprised of nine total major vents, the complex eruption thunderously explodes up through each simultaneously to large heights in different directions. It is something to behold! Afterwards, it will pass through a succession of smaller bursts, until eventually dying out after about 15 minutes.
