In Yellowstone National Park, wildlife have the right-of-way at all times and in all places, even remote locations such as Dunraven Pass in the northeast portion of the park. Yellowstone National Park of Wyoming is well known for its variety of wildlife living in the high altitudes of the region. Some, such as the bear, only emerge during the warmer months when vegetation for grazing is plentiful, and hibernate the rest of the year. Others, such as the bison, migrate to follow the seasonal grazing zones. During the winter months, grazing is best accomplished at the lower altitudes where snowfall is much less, or in the thermal area where the constant flow of hot water melts the surrounding snowfall. In the summer months, vegetation becomes more plentiful at the higher altitudes due to less grazing there. During the migration between grazing zones, bison will take the route that is easiest to travel, which often ends up being the pavement if available. At 8859 feet in altitude, Dunraven Pass is the highest point of the Grand Loop Road in Yellowstone National Park, where the road passes over the shoulder of Mount Washburn, in the more remote northeast region of the park. The Wild Images Team was traveling over Dunraven Pass during one of our many stays in Yellowstone, when we encountered this slow moving bison, unperturbed by the building up of a line of cars behind it. Unlike slow moving vehicles in urban settings, everyone stuck behind this slow mover were all smiles. We had to capture this image!
