Beehive Geyser is one of the major erupting geysers in Yellowstone National Park of Wyoming, and is also one of the tallest active geyser eruptions in the world. Unfortunately, most visitors never have the pleasure of witnessing its eruptions. Though it is located on Geyser Hill of the Upper Geyser Basin and within sight of the much more famous Old Faithful, it is both far less frequent and far less predictable. Therefore to see its eruption requires a lot of luck, a lot of patience, or a lot of both. Erupting no more than once a day, it is as likely to erupt in the dark hours of the night as it is during the light of day. But when it does erupt, it is well worth being there for it. Emanating from a four foot grotto in the shape of a skep, the old style inverted wicker basket beehive, which acts as a nozzle and launches boiling water over 200 feet into the sky. The Wild Images Team has spent many months in Yellowstone National Park, and we have photographed dozens of eruptions of Beehive Geyser. This particular day was very special though. The one eruption for the day occurred just minutes before the sun set behind the distant ridgeline, creating an enormous rainbow in the steam curtain and casting reddish orange light on the water and steam. Even using a 90 degree wide angle lens, we were only able to capture most of the rainbow arc in one image, that is how large it was. Below the rainbow can be seen the few visitors that happened to be at the right place at the right time to witness the spectacle. Notice that while an amazing rainbow hangs over them, their attention is focused towards the eruption itself. In the background under the rainbow on the right can be seen Old Faithful Lodge just beyond Old Faithful Hill. The Beehive Geyser grotto is just off the right side of the photo and cannot be seen here.
